Tips to Increase Your Public Speaking Confidence

Cat got your tongue? Most people become completely tongue tied and suffer a complete case of memory loss when it comes to public speaking. Anxiety and nerves take over and all intelligent thought leaves. The majority of people are not aware that they probably go through the day breathing all wrong! Learning to breathe correctly, and deeply during anxious times, can be used as an instant calming technique. Proper breathing merely entails inhaling from the nose and exhaling from the mouth. Since we don't pay attention to our breathing, in the beginning you will find this taxing. You might even catch yourself inhaling through the mouth and then suddenly try to breathe through the nose. Exhale, relax and start again.

Taking deep breaths prior to your speaking engagement will actually calm your entire body. It will give you a chance to compose your mind and thoughts before speaking. Breathe in, breathe out. Do this five times and let your body go completely limp. This anxiety-relieving practice will loosen tense muscles, calm your racing heart and enable you to focus on the matter at hand.

Another way to build your confidence is good old fashioned preparation. The key here is the first three letters - pre, meaning before. Prepare for public speaking engagement at least a day before will lessen anxiety. If you go into this knowing ahead what you will be speaking about, you will be less likely to panic when it's "showtime". Consider using index cards and writing down the topic of each part of your speech on an individual card. On the back of a card that is labeled, for example, "productivity", you might list several points you want to discuss such as "increasing productivity", "combating low productivity" and so on. These cue cards will enable you to relax, concentrate and enjoy public speaking with confidence!
